Doing keyword research RIGHT is essential to your success as a PPC marketer. it doesn’t matter how many cool Google AdWords tricks you know, if you can do this part right, you will get no where.
With that said, lets lets get started with the strategies.
Strategy 1: “Building Themed Keywords” – This strategy is critical in your initial research, you must figure out all the different themes or concepts or grouping. Imagine yourself with a big net, essentially you want to capture as much of the market as possible.
So if your in the golf market. And your selling a e book guide on how to play golf better. There are literally so many different themes in this category. For e.g you could ‘theme’ your keywords into some of the following themes: improve golf swing, increase golf drive, learning golf, improve putting, golf mindset, etc.
You get the point, I’m capturing a very wide area of the market, as opposed to choosing one of these many themes and going ‘deep. Meaning that you dig and dig and find as many keywords within that on theme.
Don’t do that, make sure when your building you keyword list, go BROAD or WIDE first, we can do deep later after we gather proper data from our results.
Strategy 2: Domain Bidding – This technique involves bidding on all the relevant domain names in your niche. You may or may not realize this, but many many people will actually type in the domain or part of a domain into Google to find the website. I do this a lot myself, mostly because I’m not sure the exact address so I’ll type it into Google and it will give me the site I’m looking for.
Knowing this user behavior, we need to take advantage of this by putting these domains into our keyword list, and don’t under estimate the volume of traffic you can get by doing this, sometimes i get thousands of clicks per day just from domain name bidding.
So how do we get these relevant domains. Do a Google search for your main keyword and find one or two related websites. Then go to quantcast.com and enter it in, quantcast will give you a lot of info about the website but it will also give you relates sites. you want to use all these sites.
You can even take each one of these related sites and enter then back into quantcast which will give me another set of related sites. You can easily generate a list of 100+ domain names that you can bid on in less than 30 minutes.
Strategy 3: Another very powerful technique is “Geo Targeting” – Now this strategy wont be appropriate for every niche, however it is very valuable when you can use it. I’ll give you an e.g. Say I’m marketing a service where I provide real estate property listing for investors.
Don’t you think they’ll be searching for: ‘properties in Michigan’ or ‘houses in Seattle’.
Notice that you could do this for every suburb, city, or state? This will give you a a lot of super targeted keywords that will convert like crazy, providing you website is good quality.
