Betting on Horse Racing and Managing Your Money – Part Three

This is the third in a series of articles on betting on horse racing profitably through sensible money management.
I have so far discussed why looking for value in horses, rather than just betting on favourites is so important. This was in the first article in this series.
Then, in the second article I emphasized the point that if you’re not using a betting bank, or you do not have a structured staking plan, then you are playing with fire. In short, this is a big mistake when betting on horses.
One Of The Biggest Mistakes You Can Make As A Punter
In this article, I am going to examine possibly the most common mistake that punters make when betting on horses. This is one that perhaps all of us have been guilty of doing at one point or another, as the temptation can often prove too great.
So which mistake is it that I am talking about? Its chasing your losses.
The reason that I am dedicating a whole article to this one subject, is because it can literally take the shirt off your back as things can escalate so quickly.
Plus I know first hand how this can happen, as I did progressive staking (a posh name for chasing your losses!) several years ago, before I became the disciplined punter that I am today.
How Chasing Your Losses Can Spiral Out Of Control Quickly
The easiest way to illustrate this is by using a simple example: Let’s say a punter places £50 on a horse, and he loses. What happens next is the punter selects another horse in a different race. However, instead of placing another £50 on that horse, the punter feels the need to also win back what he lost on his first horse, and so places a bet of £100.
When this second horse loses, the punter is now down to the tune of £150, just like that. And so the punter selects another horse that is a dead cert to win its race, and its at a price of 2/1, so what does the punter do?
He doesn’t place £50 on the horse to recoup £100 and only be £50 down for the day, oh no. He chases his losses by placing another bet of £100, thinking that the £200 profit he’ll get will recoup his losses of £150, plus £50 profit. Right?
Well, yes, mathematically and theoretically that is correct, but let us examine this equation more closely to see what big mistake this punter is making by betting on horses in this fashion.
Do Not Break One Of The Golden Rules of Betting
In effect, what this punter is doing is placing a £100 bet to win £50, as this is the profit that he will make, factoring in the £150 that he already lost. Are you with me?
So this is like betting on 2/1-on favourite, where you have to put £2 on just to win £1 back. This is madness, as there is no value whatsoever in this bet and it goes completely against what I talked about in the first article in this series.
And that’s assuming that his third horse wins!
It’s a fact that good punters get use to; when betting on horse racing you are always going to go through a losing run, it may be two horses, five horses or more, but you need to weather the storm and this is done through the value horses I discussed in the first article in this series.
Even the best horse racing tipsters, the ones who work for newspapers and on television, have losing runs, and they’re as close to being experts as you will get. So we all go through it, and the secret is staying focused and true to your plan – not disregarding the plan just because a couple of horses have not won.

Google Desktop – Safe to Use

1 Jul 2009Google has been taking a lot of heat for its new desktop software. It allows a user to search files on multiple computers by storing the information on google servers. The criticism here is that google then has access to your information. People are afraid that their privacy will be violated. They are also afraid for general security of their data.
I for one use google desktop and am not afraid for my privacy or security. Google is fighting the federal government for search results that have no user data involved. If they are fighting given out that information you can be assured they would not allow personal files to be shown to anyone but authorized users. Also, identity theft is most likely a result of some sort of credit card fraud not from doing a search on google. People will give out their credit card number out on the internet but refuse to use google software. That seems odd to me. If there is one company out there that I feel safe leaving my data with is google.
With all the plug ins to the google desktop sidebar and now with the availability to search files on multiple computers, this software is definitely worth a try. I use it to quickly check my gmail account, check my adsense, and search for files on and off the web. ItÂ?s a great time saver and secure.
The bottom line is google is secure. Their success depends on it.

Improve PPC Performance Using Negative Keywords
30 Jun 2009When NOT to Show Your Ad Negative keywords permit advertisers to specify when ads should not be shown, such as when a keyword has multiple meanings or is part of other popular queries.
Let’s consider an example of a specialty cookie company that advertises on the keyword “cookies”. People would see the ad if they searched on “chocolate chip cookies” or “specialty cookies”. Paying for these clicks makes sense. However, the ad may also show up for people who search on “web cookies” or “eliminate cookies from my hard drive”.
Most ads sufficiently specify the product to which an advertiser refers, hence we would expect few erroneous clicks. However, many users click on ads without reading the text and realizing that they refer to something other than what they are looking for. Believe it or not, this is a substantial problem, particularly for highly placed ads (the problem diminishes further down the page). Even a few erroneous clicks can generate significant expenses on competitive keywords.
Even if we ignore the effect of spurious clicks, the extra ad impressions are problematic for two more reasons. First, programs like AdWords determine ad placement partly from click-through-rate (CTR), thus showing your ad when it is unlikely to get clicks will result in lower CTR and lower placement. Second, extra impressions skew statistics that would otherwise provide valuable insight into user behavior.
Finding Negative Keywords Negative keywords are remarkably easy to find. Simply type the phrase of interest into a search engine and see what comes up. Searches on common and short phrases almost invariably turn up results that don’t conform to your intended usage. Look at what other words always appear with your keyword. For instance, a search on “cookies” turns up many pages that include the words “Internet” and “web”. By adding these as negative keywords for our ads we can prevent the ad from showing when the words “Internet” or “web” are included with “cookies” in a search query.
The easiest way to find negative keywords is with Google Keyword Tool. A query on “cookies” provides a list of the most popular searches that included that word along with how popular each search has been over the past month. Here are some negative keywords turned up by this technique (your results may differ):
- recipe
- jar
- cutter
- monster
- enable
- disable
- internet
- tin
- press
- computer
Not only is this a very quick way to find negative keywords, it’s also based upon real user behavior. You can try inferring search phrases from search results, but nothing beats real search statistics.
In summary, negative keywords help target keyword ads to likely customers and can greatly improve campaign cost effectiveness.

Certainly the high number of people who are unemployed right now would be considered a crisis situation in the United States economy. Desperate people will often do desperate things!
One thing I would caution you on is do not jump into any opportunity to make money that sounds too good to be true.

To avoid getting scammed on the Internet today you need to deal in opportunities that are proven! Let me give you one example.

Google is not going to scam you out of anything.
If you are reading a sales page for a business opportunity and it contains words like “we do all the work”, “work one hour day and get rich”, and so on, you need to be very cautious before you invest any money.
If it were so much easier to make money online than it is to make it in a traditional business more people would be doing it. The reality is to avoid getting scammed online you must expect to work hard and deal only with proven business opportunities.
